Why Downtown?

Whether you're arriving by plane, driving the Alaska Highway, or using Whitehorse as your base for exploring the Yukon, staying downtown puts many of the city's attractions within easy walking distance. Hotels, restaurants, museums, shops, and the Yukon River are all close together, making it a convenient place to spend your first—or last—few nights in the territory.

For many visitors, downtown Whitehorse works best as a launching point. Spend the day exploring the city before heading south to Carcross, west toward Kluane National Park, or north to Dawson City. If you're joining an aurora tour, river excursion, or other guided experience, many operators also offer pickups from downtown hotels.

Whitehorse isn't a large city, so "downtown" covers a surprisingly compact area. Most hotels are within a comfortable walk of the waterfront, Main Street, the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site, the MacBride Museum, and the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. Even if you're planning a Yukon road trip, it's often nice to spend a day or two on foot before hitting the highway.
