“You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow — but your lips must touch the toe.” That’s the oath of the Sourtoe Cocktail Club, and it belongs to one of the strangest travel traditions on Earth, alive and well in Dawson City. Tens of thousands of brave visitors have taken the plunge. Here is the story behind it, and what you should know before you decide.
What exactly is it?
The Sourtoe Cocktail is a shot of spirits — traditionally whisky — garnished with a real, preserved (mummified) human toe. To join the club, the toe must touch your lips as you drink. You do not swallow the toe; you simply let it touch you, then you’re awarded a certificate and bragging rights for life.
The origin story
The tradition dates to the 1970s, when a local character reportedly found a preserved toe and dropped it into a drink on a dare. It caught on, and despite the occasional lost or swallowed toe over the decades, the club has endured, replenished by donations from — yes — people who have lost toes to frostbite and other misfortunes.
Where and how
You’ll find the ceremony at the Downtown Hotel in Dawson City, presided over by the “Toe Captain,” who lays out the rules with theatrical seriousness. There’s a fee, and a strict penalty for anyone who swallows the toe. It’s equal parts gross-out, comedy, and genuine northern ritual.
Should you do it?
It’s entirely optional, and plenty of visitors happily skip it. But for many, the Sourtoe is exactly the kind of only-in-the-Yukon story they came north hoping to collect. If you’re squeamish, watching someone else take the oath is entertainment enough.
However you feel about it, the Sourtoe captures something true about Dawson: a town that has always turned hardship, oddity, and isolation into humour and legend. Love it or recoil, it’s a story you’ll be telling for years.
