Best sunset spots in the Yukon

Whitehorse area

Grey Mountain is the classic choice, and unlike some Yukon viewpoints, you can actually drive most of the way up.

Grey Mountain Road climbs to several viewpoints accessible by standard vehicles, though the road itself is rough in places, so check conditions before you go. The reward is a wide, elevated view over the Yukon River valley. Fish Lake Road, northwest of the city, climbs to real elevation too, with views back toward the Coast Mountains that catch alpenglow well after the sun itself has dropped. Miles Canyon's suspension bridge, only ten minutes from downtown, is a reliable, easy option on any clear evening, the basalt walls and the river below both pick up the colour beautifully.

Beyond Whitehorse

Emerald Lake, on the drive south toward Carcross, is worth timing for golden hour specifically, the mineral-blue water shifts toward turquoise and gold as the light lowers. Further along, the Carcross Desert offers one of the more distinctive sunset views in the territory: stand among the dunes and look west over Bennett Lake as the light drops behind the mountains on the far shore. Marsh Lake's day-use area, with its long west-facing shoreline, is a straightforward, uncrowded option if you're staying in that direction.

Kluane and beyond

Kathleen Lake, in Kluane National Park, is a genuine standout: the St. Elias peaks catch real colour in the last light, and the lake itself mirrors it back. King's Throne, partway up, adds elevation and drama if you're already on the trail. Sheep Mountain, on the Alaska Highway beside Kluane Lake, looks out over the largest lake in the Yukon as the sun drops behind the surrounding peaks.

Go North

Up the Dempster Highway, the open tundra and low, colourful ground cover make for a genuinely different kind of sunset experience, wide-open sky with almost nothing breaking the horizon. Inside Tombstone Territorial Park specifically, looking west over the jagged Tombstone Range as the light lowers is one of the more dramatic sunset views anywhere in the territory. From Dawson City, the drive up to Midnight Dome delivers a 360-degree view over the meeting of the Klondike and Yukon Rivers, free, paved, and only about 20 minutes from downtown, genuinely one of the better vantage points in the North for both sunset and, later in the evening, the aurora.

The truth about summer sunset

In late June and early July, the sun sets around 11:35pm in Whitehorse and rises again by about 4:30am, leaving twilight rather than true darkness in between. If you want a proper golden hour, late August through late September is a better bet, sunset shifts from around 9pm to 7:30pm across that window, and the light behaves the way you'd expect it to further south. October adds snow-dusted peaks to the mix, at the cost of real cold. If aurora is also on your list, most of these same spots double as viewing locations once the sky actually gets dark.
