Affordable Eats Across the Yukon

Yukon dining runs pricier than southern Canada, but food trucks, cafés, bakeries and happy hours keep real meals within reach. That's true in every part of the territory, not just the capital.

Whitehorse

Food trucks set up around town in the warmer months. The City of Whitehorse publishes a mobile vendor list each year, and in 2026 it included Klonbite, ChipInn Fish & Chips and Food Ninja at Steele Street and Third Avenue, and Azhong Noodles, Smashed YXY and Fast & Tasty on the downtown waterfront. Locations change from year to year, so check the City's current list.

BBQ King on Ogilvie Street is known for portions meant for sharing. La Cara posts daily specials on a sidewalk chalkboard and has an app for pre-ordering and loyalty rewards. Takhini Gas, on the North Klondike Highway at the edge of town, has burgers and hot food any time of day, a pastry and muffin selection in the mornings, and an off-sale beer, wine and spirits selection.

For happy hour, Klondike Rib and Salmon, Woodcutter's Blanket, Dirty Northern Public House and Sanchez Cantina run daily or weekly specials. Check with them directly, since hours and seasons change.

Carcross

Caribou Crossing Coffee carries a changing range of pastries and light meals. Some, like pizza and sandwiches, are made in house, and others come from Swiss Bakery or Daddy's Donuts. Day-old items are sometimes discounted.

Haines Junction

The Village Bakery sells pizza by the slice and soup, and it's a lunch stop on the way to or from Kluane. Frosty Freeze, just down the road, serves soft-serve and a simple burger. Cash is often preferred.

Carmacks

The burger stand at Coal Mine Campground is a stop on the North Klondike Highway between Whitehorse and Dawson.

Dawson City

Riverwest Bistro is a counter-service cafe on Front Street with river views, serving breakfast and lunch. It's open seasonally, spring through fall. Cheechako Bake Shop is nearby, and its hours can be seasonal, so check ahead.

Everywhere else

In smaller communities, the local grocery store or gas station deli is often the most dependable option, with sandwiches, hot food bars and grab-and-go items. Ask locally when you arrive, since small-town food options open and close between seasons.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is it possible to eat cheaply in Whitehorse?

Yes, with some effort, everywhere from Whitehorse to the smallest highway stops. Food trucks, bakeries, happy hour specials, and grocery store delis all help keep costs down compared to eating every meal at a sit-down restaurant.

Do food trucks operate in the winter?

No, most shut down from roughly October through April across the territory. Winter affordable eating leans on bakeries, delis, and happy hour specials instead.

Are there affordable eating options outside of Whitehorse & Dawson City?

Yes. Carcross has Caribou Crossing Coffee, Haines Junction has the Village Bakery and Frosty Freeze, Carmacks has the Coal Mine Campground burger stand, and grocery stores or gas station delis fill the gap in most other communities.

What's the best way to eat affordably in a small Yukon community?

Ask locally as soon as you arrive. Small-town food options open and close between seasons more than in bigger cities, and locals usually know exactly what's currently running.
