48 hours in Yukon
Two days is enough to see downtown Whitehorse, take one wilderness hit, and eat well. Here is a tight plan built around 48 hours in territory that is roughly the size of Spain.
Day 1: Whitehorse basics
Start on Main Street at Baked Cafe for a $6 flat white and a cinnamon bun, then walk the Millennium Trail loop along the Yukon River — about 5 km, mostly flat, with the SS Klondike sternwheeler as the halfway point. Entry to the Klondike historic site is $8. Cross the footbridge to the fish ladder if it is June through September, free, and often quieter than the main path.
Lunch at Klondike Rib and Salmon on 2nd Avenue: bison stew or arctic char, roughly $22-$28. Spend the afternoon at the MacBride Museum on 1st Avenue ($15) for gold-rush context, then finish at Woodcutter's Blanket on Wood Street for a Yukon Brewing pint around $8.
Day 2: Out of town
Rent a car (Budget on 4th Avenue, from about $85/day) and drive 30 minutes south on the Alaska Highway to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. Entry is $22 and the 5 km loop shows lynx, muskox, moose and mountain goats in real habitat. Combine it with Takhini Hot Springs next door — $17.50 for a soak, towel rental $5.
Back in town by 5 pm. Dinner at Antoinette's on Wood Street (Caribbean-Yukon fusion, mains $28-$35) or Burnt Toast Cafe for a cheaper $18 plate. If it is aurora season (late August to mid-April), book a $130 chase van pickup at 10 pm rather than driving yourself.
Getting the timing right
Erie Air Canada and WestJet land at Whitehorse Erik Nielsen (YXY) from Vancouver in about 2.5 hours. Taxis to downtown run a flat $18. Skip a rental car for day one — everything downtown is walkable within 15 minutes. Book the wildlife preserve and hot springs combo ticket ($36) directly at the preserve gate to save $3.

Getting around Yukon and when to go
A rental vehicle is non-negotiable outside Whitehorse. Distances are large and honest: Whitehorse to Dawson is 533 km on the Klondike Highway, roughly 6 hours with fuel stops at Carmacks and Pelly Crossing. Whitehorse to Haines Junction is 158 km, about 1 hour 45 minutes on the Alaska Highway. The Dempster Highway to Inuvik is 736 km of unpaved gravel from the junction near Dawson and requires two spare tires. Husky Bus offers a Whitehorse-Dawson run in summer for about CAD 149 one way if you truly cannot drive.
Best months are late February to mid-March for aurora with tolerable cold (minus 15 to minus 25), and September for autumn colours on the Tombstone tundra with far fewer people than July. Peak summer (late June to mid-August) has 20 hours of daylight and the highest prices. November and early December are the quietest and cheapest, but many Dawson businesses shut for the season.
