Haines Junction is 158 km west of Whitehorse and the gateway to Kluane National Park. Doable as a long 12-hour day, but overnight is better.

The drive out

Head west on the Alaska Highway. Pull off at Kluane Lake viewpoint (km 1,065) — this is the largest lake in Yukon and turquoise from glacial silt. Drive time is 2 hours flat with no traffic and few passing lanes. The final descent into Haines Junction reveals the St. Elias Mountains, a wall of 5,000-metre peaks. Stop at Da Ku Cultural Centre on Alaska Highway — free entry, excellent Southern Tutchone exhibits, and the Yukon Parks desk sells trail maps for $5.

Kluane essentials

The must-do half-day hike is Kings Throne, a steep 10 km return climb from Kathleen Lake with 900 m of elevation gain — allow 5 hours. If that is too much, do the flat Cottonwood Trail loop from Kathleen Lake day-use area, 4 km and easy. Free entry to Kluane park day-use areas. For a splurge, book a same-day flightseeing tour with Rocking Star Adventures — 90 minutes over Mount Logan for $445, reserve 24 hours ahead.

Eat before driving back

Frosty Freeze on Alaska Highway does a proper 6-oz Yukon burger for $16 and soft-serve for $6, cash preferred. Village Bakery next door has sourdough loaves for $9 and hot lunch specials until 3pm — try the caribou stew when it appears. For dinner, The Raven Restaurant serves a solid halibut plate at $34. Fuel up at Fas Gas before the return drive; there is nothing open between Haines Junction and Whitehorse after 8pm.
