About Huntsville

Huntsville has a long history as a lumber town and later as a summer destination. The arrival of the railway in the late nineteenth century helped establish it as a stop for visitors heading to Muskoka cottages and resorts. Today it hosts events throughout the year, including a well-known film festival and winter carnivals, and it remains a base for outdoor activities such as boating, hiking, skiing and snowmobiling. The surrounding landscape of granite outcrops, pine forest and lakes defines the area, and Algonquin Provincial Park lies to the east. With 82 hotels listed on our site, the town offers accommodation across a range of styles, from large resorts to small motels and inns.

Where to stay in Huntsville

Downtown Huntsville. The town centre puts you within walking distance of shops, restaurants and the Muskoka River waterfront, and it is convenient for events at the Algonquin Theatre.

Fairy Lake and Peninsula Lake areas. These areas east of downtown are close to the water and to resorts and marinas, and they offer easier access to boating and lakeside trails.

Highway 60 corridor. Properties along Highway 60 east of town are convenient for travellers heading to Algonquin Provincial Park and for those arriving by car from the east.

Hidden Valley and Deerhurst area. This area near Peninsula Lake is home to larger resorts and golf courses and is popular for family stays and winter sports.

Getting there and around

Huntsville is reached mainly by car via Highway 11, which connects it to Toronto and North Bay, and via Highway 60, which leads east toward Algonquin Provincial Park. The town is about a two-hour drive north of Toronto in normal conditions. Ontario Northland and other intercity bus services have historically served the community, and the nearest major airport is Toronto Pearson International Airport, with smaller regional airports in the area. Within Huntsville, a car is the most practical way to reach lakeside resorts and trailheads, though the downtown core is walkable. Local taxi services operate, and some resorts provide shuttle arrangements for guests.

When to go

Summer is the busiest season, when the lakes are used for swimming, boating and fishing, and when many events take place. Autumn brings cooler weather and changing leaves, which draws visitors for drives and hikes. Winter supports skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling when conditions allow, and spring is quieter with variable weather. The choice of season depends on whether you want water activities, fall colours or winter sports.
