Whitehorse: better than you’d expect
Antoinette’s (Caribbean-Yukon fusion, $30-40 mains) is the city’s most interesting kitchen — book two weeks ahead. Wayfarer Oyster House does surprisingly excellent seafood shipped from the coast. Klondike Rib & Salmon (summer only, June-Sept, $25-35) is touristy but the elk stroganoff is genuinely good and the line moves. Baked Café for morning: best pastries and coffee. Burnt Toast Café does the best brunch. Yukon Brewing’s taproom for post-hike beers and pretzels.
Beyond Whitehorse
Village Bakery in Haines Junction — worth the 160 km drive alone for the cinnamon buns and quiche. Bonton and Company in Whitehorse for European-style deli lunches. In Dawson, Klondike Kate’s for pancakes and the Drunken Goat Taverna for surprisingly authentic Greek. Skip most 'chef-driven' menus at hotel restaurants outside Whitehorse — outside a few standouts, hotel food in the Yukon is functional at best.
