About St. John's

Today, St. John's is a centre for government, education, and the offshore oil industry, but it retains a strong sense of place. George Street offers a dense concentration of pubs and live music venues, while the waterfront and harbour remain active with fishing and supply vessels. The city is also a gateway to outdoor activities along the Avalon Peninsula, including coastal hiking trails and whale-watching in season. With a mix of historic sites, cultural festivals, and a rugged coastal setting, St. John's provides a distinct Canadian travel experience.

Where to stay in St. John's

Downtown St. John's. The compact downtown area around Water Street and Duckworth Street puts you within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and the harbour.

Signal Hill. This elevated area offers views over the city and the Atlantic, and is close to Cabot Tower and the North Head Trail.

Quidi Vidi. A small historic fishing village within the city, known for its narrow streets, the Quidi Vidi Brewery, and access to walking trails.

Kenmount Road. A commercial and business district west of downtown, with many chain hotels and easy access to the Trans-Canada Highway.

Getting there and around

St. John's International Airport is about 15 minutes by car from downtown, with taxi and rideshare services available. The city is not connected to the mainland by bridge, so arrival by road is via the Trans-Canada Highway from the west, including the Marine Atlantic ferry from Nova Scotia. Within the city, a car is useful for exploring areas outside downtown, but the central core is walkable. Metrobus operates public bus routes, and taxis are readily available.

When to go

The most comfortable months to visit are June through September, when temperatures are mild and many festivals and events take place. July and August are the warmest, though fog and rain can occur. Winter brings cold, windy, and snowy conditions, but the city remains open for business and winter activities. Spring can be damp and cool, with icebergs sometimes visible from the coast in late spring and early summer.
