4-star hotels in Thorold

Thorold sits along the Welland Canal, the waterway that lets ships bypass Niagara Falls, and it has a historic downtown with a cluster of shops and restaurants. Niagara Falls is normally a 15- to 20-minute drive away, so the town works as a quieter base for the falls, for Brock University, and for the canal locks and trails. All eight four-star properties are self-catering homes on residential streets, not in the downtown cluster. Five sit in the north of town around Sun Haven Lane, Vanilla Trail and Ever Sweet Way, all within about 1.7 km of the centre. The larger houses suit families and groups; the smaller ones suit couples on a short break. A car is the practical way to reach all of them.

Getting there and around

Thorold is reached by car via Highway 406 and Highway 58, which link to the Queen Elizabeth Way. Toronto Pearson International Airport is about a 1.5-hour drive away, while Buffalo Niagara International Airport is closer. St. Catharines Transit runs bus routes connecting Thorold with St. Catharines and Brock University, though service is less frequent than in larger cities. Getting around is easiest by car, as attractions are spread out. Taxis and ride-sharing exist but frequencies vary, and cycling is possible on some roads, with care needed on busy routes.

When to go

Summer, from June to August, is when Thorold is at its liveliest: the weather is warm, the Welland Canal is busy with ships, and the canal paths are good for walking and cycling. Spring and autumn bring milder temperatures and fewer crowds, and autumn adds colourful foliage. Winter is cold and snowy, but the canal and locks stay open for viewing and the Thorold Museum is an indoor option. The Canal Days festival in nearby Port Colborne falls in summer.
