Staying in Downtown Whitehorse

Downtown Whitehorse is fifteen walkable blocks between Second Avenue and the river. It is not a picturesque old town — most buildings are 1970s municipal boxes — but the government offices, the bus depot on Second and the SS Klondike are all here, so visitors tend to spend time in it whether they planned to or not. Winter is serious: by 9pm on a Tuesday in January the sidewalks are empty and the wind off the Yukon River cuts through anything short of a proper parka. The sidewalks on Main, Second and Third are plowed and salted by 7am, and everything you need sits within eight blocks.

The hotels on this list are spread across the downtown grid and just beyond it. Edgewater Hotel sits on Main Street, a half block from the MacBride Museum on First Avenue. Several apartment-style properties take addresses on Hanson Street, 4 Avenue and Front Street, while others lie further out on Wilson Drive, Iskoot Crescent, Keish Street and Finch Crescent. The mix of hotel rooms and self-contained flats with kitchens suits couples and families who want space, and business travellers who need to be near the offices; short breaks work because so much is on foot.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

Downtown Whitehorse is a compact grid of fifteen walkable blocks between Second Avenue and the river, with the bus depot on Second. The sidewalks on Main, Second and Third are plowed and salted by 7am, and everything you need is within eight blocks. On foot, start at the visitor centre on Second and Hanson, cut down to the river past the SS Klondike, and follow the Millennium Trail north along the water, passing the fish ladder (only interesting August-September) and continuing to Rotary Peace Park; cross Robert Campbell Bridge to the Riverdale side and loop back over the Robert Service Way footbridge. It is flat, paved and plowed in winter, about 90 minutes at a slow pace.

When to go

Winter here is not mild: by 9pm on a Tuesday in January the sidewalks are empty and the wind off the Yukon River will slice through anything short of a proper parka. A peacoat will not cut it in January — wear proper boots and a parka rated to -40°C. Summer brings the busiest season, with a 30-minute wait at the MacBride Museum's bison meatloaf and Arctic char spot on Second Avenue, which closes at the end of September and reopens in May. The fish ladder on the Millennium Trail is only interesting August-September.
