3-star hotels in Downtown Whitehorse
A shortlist of 3-star hotels in Downtown Whitehorse, the fifteen walkable blocks between Second Avenue and the Yukon River. It is for travellers who want to be in the middle of the government offices, the Second Avenue bus depot and the SS Klondike rather than out in the woods.
Staying in Downtown Whitehorse
Downtown Whitehorse is fifteen walkable blocks between Second Avenue and the river, and it is where every Yukon trip actually starts. This is not a picturesque old town — most buildings are 1970s municipal boxes — but the government offices, the bus depot on Second and the SS Klondike all sit here, so you will end up in the middle of it. The sidewalks on Main, Second and Third are plowed and salted by 7am, and everything you need is within eight blocks. The 3-star hotels on this list cluster on and around Main Street, Second Avenue, Wood Street and Jarvis Street, with a handful of bed and breakfasts and an apartment on the quieter edges at Ponderosa Drive, Teslin Rd, McLean Lake Rd, Metropolit Lane and 8 Avenue.

Getting there and around
On foot is the practical way around Downtown Whitehorse. The Millennium Trail runs from the visitor centre on Second and Hanson, cuts down to the river past the SS Klondike and follows the water north to Rotary Peace Park, crossing the Robert Campbell Bridge to the Riverdale side and looping back over the Robert Service Way footbridge. It is flat, paved and plowed in winter, roughly 90 minutes at a slow pace. The bus depot on Second Avenue puts the rest of the Yukon within reach.
When to go
January is the honest test: the sidewalks on Main, Second and Third are cleared and salted by 7am, but you need boots and a parka rated to -40°C, because a peacoat will not cut it and the sidewalks are empty by 9pm on a Tuesday. Summer brings the 30-minute waits and the crowds at the MacBride Museum on First Avenue, and the fish ladder is only interesting in August and September. Several downtown restaurants close at the end of September and reopen in May.
